Most expensive panel mistakes begin with one convenient assumption: that a 10 × 10 gazebo has four 10-foot wall openings. Roof dimensions, post centers and clear openings are different measurements. Record the actual frame bay for every side.
What you need
Use a metal tape, a step ladder, painter’s tape, a pencil and a simple four-side sketch. A second person helps keep a long tape level. Label the bays A through D and mark the planned entrance before recording numbers.
Step 1: identify the attachment line
Find where the top edge will hang: beneath a beam, from a track, around a rail or through existing hooks. Measure from that line. Decorative roof overhang and gutter edges do not determine panel width.
Step 2: measure every width
Measure the usable distance between posts at the top, middle and bottom. Record the smallest obstruction and any brackets. Do not assume the opposite side matches.
Step 3: measure both heights
Measure from the attachment line to the intended lower anchor at both ends of the bay. Sloped patios and uneven decks can create a meaningful difference. A panel that drags gathers dirt; a short panel leaks wind.
Step 4: plan corners and the door
Decide whether panels zip together, meet at a post or overlap. Then place the door where people naturally approach. Note the required zipper position as viewed from outside so left and right cannot become an expensive argument.
