Canvas and mesh panels sometimes appear in the same product category, but they should not be compared as interchangeable sidewalls. Canvas creates screening and shade. Mesh creates a breathable insect boundary. Hybrid panels occupy the useful middle ground.
Choose canvas when privacy leads
Opaque outdoor fabric makes a gazebo feel more secluded and can block low afternoon sun. It is useful along a neighboring property line or behind seating. Because it reduces daylight and sightlines, many owners use canvas on one or two exposed sides rather than enclosing every bay.
Choose mesh when insects end the evening
Fine mesh lets warm air move and keeps the open-air character. It works best when the edges close around the full perimeter and the zipper door can be shut easily. Gaps under the roof line, at the floor or beside posts can undermine an otherwise good mesh set.
The hybrid option
A canvas panel with a clear PVC window provides privacy around seated eye level while maintaining a view. It can feel more finished than a fully transparent tarp and may hide storage or neighboring structures. Check window placement against railings and furniture before ordering.
Daily-use details
A panel is only helpful if the entrance works from inside and outside. Look for double-pull zippers, tie-backs that hold rolled fabric securely and closures that do not require crouching. Put the primary door on the bay facing steps or the normal path.
